The Wielka Warszawska is coming (Służewiec Racecourse, Poland)
The most prestigious race of the season is getting closer. Modeled on the Prix l’Arc de Triomphe, the Wielka Warszawska (September 25) boasts a long tradition and is the most important racing event of the season. Traditionally, Poland’s best older thoroughbreds will line up at the start, and it is certain that the top three-year-olds will be up for the challenge. It is actually this clash that will make it possible to accurately determine the strength of the various vintages.
The significant prize pool (PLN 306,250) may also be of interest to foreign horse owners. Two years ago, Warsaw welcomed the excellent Nagano Gold, who raced at a high level in France under Czech training. He won in the Wielka Warszawska beating the rising star of Polish racing, Night Tornado, in the straight. Last year it was Night Tornado who proved unrivaled, while German Nania finished fifth.
What about this year? Will the big race attract foreign visitors again? Will the winner be an older horse, a three-year-old, a stallion or a mare? The deadline to sign up for the Wielka Warszawska is August 24.
There are three other prestigious international races for thoroughbreds on the agenda on that race day. Three-year-old and older horses will compete in the Moszna Stakes (PLN 64,750) over a distance of 1,600 meters. Two other races are intended for two two-year-olds. The top of this yearling will compete over 1,400 meter for the Prize of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (PLN 64,750). Alternatively, mares can take part in the run for the Cardea Stakes (PLN 38,500, 1,200 meters).
